Long Term Effects Of Childhood Obesity

While fat in American diets has decreased in recent years owing to the public's response to the nationwide overweight epidemic, obesity is still a growing concern. While removing fat from their diets, people will often increase their intake of sugar, high density carbohydrates, and starches. Low protein and fat meals often leave people feeling hungry, leading them to fill their stomachs as soon as possible.

The long term effects of childhood obesity are numerous. High cholesterol, high blood pressure, and the development of diseases such as type 2 diabetes are all major health risks that result from obesity. Obese adults frequently struggle against heart disease. Children with a normal healthy rate rarely suffer from these conditions.

One of the biggest concerns in recent years has been the rising number of children afflicted with type 2 diabetes - a disease that previously mainly afflicted adults. In the course of the last two decades, the statistics of children and adult afflicted with this disease have risen to fifty percent. Today, nearly thirty percent of all adults and twenty five percent of all children struggle with obesity. What's more, children who are obese often develop into obese adults. Parallel to the increase in obesity has been the increase in type 2 diabetes, also known as non insulin dependent diabetes. Throw obesity in to the equation, and this type of diabetes can be very difficult to treat. It can even cause the body to develop an insulin resistance.

Children are also at risk for contacting asthma. Overweight boys tend to have a higher risk than overweight girls. The effect of asthma is greater in children who are nonallergic. A recent study concluded that asthmatic children who were obese suffered a lot more than non-obese asthmatic children. Obese children with asthma tend to wheeze more, require more medication, and end up having to make more visits to the emergency room.

What's more, obesity can have serious psychological effects on children. The biggest problem is with self-esteem issues that results from discrimination on a social level. One recent study had obese children rate their general quality of life; they scored as low as cancer patients in chemotherapy. The children were asked to fill out a questionnaire rating their abilities to perform every day activities such as get along with others in their peer group, keep up with the rest of the class in school, sleep well, play sports, and walk a distance of more than one city block. Obese children scored low in all these areas, indicating that their quality of life was very low. Parents who were asked to fill out a similar questionnaire about their children ranked even lower in their assessment of their children's quality of life.

We live in a culture that sends out very strong messages about ideal beauty and body weight. Girls are encouraged to constantly diet and exercise until they attain a fit, thin body. Boys are told to constantly work out and do whatever is necessary to attain a buff, muscular façade. This puts both obese boys and obese girls at risk for developing psychological and eating disorders.

It's summertime. That means it's time to wax up the old surfboard and take the old "woody" down to the beach and enjoy the sounds of summer. And what would the sounds of summer be without great beach music? The one group who epitomized the beach sound was The Beach Boys.

The group originally consisted of brothers Brian, Carl and Dennis Wilson, along with their cousin Mike Love and Al Jardine. Foods to Eat When Wanting to Have a Baby Girl

Recently, there's been a lot of press about what a woman eats and the gender or sex of the baby she ultimately conceives.  A recent study indicated that women who eat breakfast and consume more daily calories (about 2200) are more likely to conceive baby boys, while women who skipped breakfast and consumed less calories throughout the day were more likely to have a girl baby.

Although these studies were important in showing that there is a definite correlation that the foods you eat effect your baby's gender, this is really only the tip of the iceberg.  There are many variables in choosing the foods that help you have a baby girl.  This article will discuss which foods to eat and which foods to avoid - and why this method works in the first place.  

Why Foods Affect Your Conceiving A Girl: You may already know this, but when you want to conceive a daughter, the foods you eat can greatly affect your vaginal acidity and PH.  Why is this important? Because the sperm which produces a baby boy is much weaker and shorter lived than the sperm that produces a girl.  This is why you should conceive well before ovulation, so that you are giving the boy sperm a long time to wait, and you are ensuring that they have died off by the time you are most fertile and can easily get pregnant.

But, another effective way to complete this process is by making your vaginal PH a very high number. Boy sperm are going to be greatly compromised in an acidic environment.  So, just skipping breakfast is not enough to really do the trick.  You'll also need to eat a diet high in acidic foods and very low (or devoid of) alkaline foods.

Consuming Calcium And Magnesium And Avoiding Potassium Foods When Trying To Have A Girl: Old wives tales will tell you that, to get a daughter, you should load up your diet with foods that are high in calcium (milk, cheese, yogurt) and magnesium (beans, legumes, leafy green foods) while you avoid foods that are high in potassium ( bananas, etc.) It is also said that you should avoid alcohol and caffeine (coffee AND chocolate).  There is somewhat of a scientific base to this advice, but again, this is only one piece of the puzzle, which leads me to my next point.

Examples Of Acidic Foods. (The Foods That Will Help You Conceive A Girl): If you really want a female baby, you'll need to go on a high PH diet and avoid the foods that can make your system more alkaline.  Examples of highly acidic foods (which you will need to eat a lot of) are many fruits (plums, prunes, cranberries) as well as meats, corn, fish and whole grains. When you are on an acidic diet, it will feel very restrictive.  It can be a bit difficult, but just keep thinking about your daughter and know that it will be worth it.

Examples Of Alkaline Foods (You Must Avoid And Steer Clear Of These): Consuming high acid foods is not going to do you any good if you counteract all of your hard work by eating alkaline foods. You must avoid these. Examples are almost all vegetables (except corn, as noted above), orange juice (remember to take folic acid supplements to replace this), potatoes, spinach, and watermelon.

Another Important Step: Changing your diet can be an effective way to get the right body chemistry to have a girl, but there is a faster way.  You can combine douching with your diet changes.  I know douching can seem old fashioned, but you'll only be doing it for a short period of time and it makes the process happen much more quickly.

If you don't believe me, go out and get some PH testing strips.  Test your vaginal PH and test again after one day on an acidic diet.  Note the changes and the move upward.  Now, douche with a solution based on how acidic you naturally are.  Retest again.  I'd be willing to bet that your reading increased more after the douching than after the foods, right?

If you absolutely don't want to douche, you can change your body through foods, but you'll have to do a really good job with self control and you should monitor your results to make sure you've gone high enough to chase all of the boy sperm away when you try to conceive.

If you're ten year old likes to do crafts there are card making kits, scrapbooking kits, and just about any kind of craft kit that she might enjoy available. Go to some local hobby stores they have kits geared toward children of all ages. If she likes to draw get her a professional drawing kit. If she likes to paint you can find something to please her as well. Creativity is something that should be promoted in your child.

Girls of this age still like dolls. A doll house may be something she would enjoy. There are interactive dolls on the market that promote imagination and learning. Maybe your ten year old likes the beauty of dolls, maybe starting a collection of dolls like porcelain dolls would be something she would like.

The fairer sex wants a little more compassion, a little more love, to be mushier, to look at the beauty around, to cuddle an animal, to be open to pink curtains and peach carpets... God, we really try... But boys will be boys... For Life...

I recently had a blast of a time at a friend's wedding... The songs, the dance, the girls, the booze and the food, all contributing to an excellent end to a great evening... But ask anyone present there, any of the guys that is, whether it was the best time he had during the long week associated with Indian marriages. The answer, more likely than not, will be No... That's not surprising, because unknown to the outside world including the bride's family, we had a Boys night out two days before the groom signed on the dotted line to end his eventful life as a bachelor.. We organized what people call a Bachelor party... I don't think calling it a bachelor's party quite covers all the angles... Because we had guys who were married who enjoyed as much as the others... So we preferred to call it a Boys night out... And boy, did we have fun... Another reason I wouldn't call it a bachelor's party was because we didn't follow any of the regular norms or rules associated with it... All we did was drink, talk and play... unimaginable games invented on the spot, unmentionable talk about the past, the present and the hopeful future, of times we had and the situations we faced, the usual cacophony associated with guys talk, and unbelievable amounts of alcohol.. But what amazed me was how a simple night like that could be more fun than all the parties, the girls and the usual destruction associated with a Blast... Maybe it was the Guy thing... the matching interests, the ability to gel with the whole group, the freedom to push each other around, to humiliate each other turn by turn... No, not humiliate, let's say put down... in a friendly sort of way... the things we can't do in presence of women, things they will never expect and never accept... No offense meant... They on their part are absolutely correct... we are sometimes absolutely incorrigibly disgusting... and it's their job to keep us straight... But sometimes our inner self comes out no matter how much they try to tame it... Boys will be boys...

A couple of my friends had visited my hometown a month back... I showed the two couples around town... It was evening when I took them to the golf club, the last stop before boarded their bus back... the rain had just stopped and the grass was glowing with sun falling on the droplets of rain.. The clouds had just lifted, giving us a view of the mountain range on the horizon... everything was perfect... well almost... My friend's fiancée just couldn't stop saying how beautiful it is, how romantic the view was... The other girl also joined in... Repeating the same compliments over and over... hoping, or maybe willing their respective guys to appreciate the beauty and the romance in the air... "Wish we had a house here", "wish we could just stay in this moment a little longer", "This is so perfect"... The guys nodded their heads and quietly agreed with them... then they looked at me and gave a wry smile... their thoughts resonated mine, their eyes and smile enough to let me know what they were thinking, no words spoken but the silence spoke louder than any words. "This place is so perfect... wish we had a Beer."

How Much Water Should Children Drink Each Day?

The standard recommendation of water intake for children is at least 6-8 glasses (1.5 - 2 liters) a day, drunk regularly throughout the day (at least 3-4 glasses while at school) ensuring that plenty of additional fluid is drunk during warm weather and/or when exercising. "When exercising" means before, during and after exercise and is not restricted to formal PE and games lessons, but is also applicable to active play (e.g. football in the playground or periods of running around).

The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, Washington DC (2004), includes a separate category for teenage boys aged 14 over who require a higher average fluid intake of 2.6 liters (about 11 large glasses).

Pupils spend at least half their waking hours in school. During this time, they should be drinking at least half their daily requirement, spread regularly throughout the day. Readily available Water Coolers strategically placed around school premises can help to achieve these aims.

What is dehydration?

Dehydration is simply not having enough water in your body. It may result from inadequate water intake and/or from losing body water and can develop rapidly or slowly.

How can you tell if children are dehydrated?

A lot of people don't even realize they are dehydrated because they have become so used to feeling below their best.

Symptoms of mild dehydration can be difficult for teachers to spot. In class some children may become irritable, tired and less able to concentrate. By the time they get home many children are complaining of tiredness or headaches and some may be too lethargic to do anything but slump in front of the television. Although we may think of this behaviour as normal, it is now known that it may, at least in part, be due to the effects of dehydration.

Children can be taught to recognize when their fluid intake is too low as the urine becomes concentrated (small amounts of deep yellow, cloudy, smelly urine). If their urine's no darker than the color of pale straw, odorless and copious they're doing OK.

What effect does dehydration have on the brain?

Water makes up about 80% of the brain and is an essential element in neurological transmissions. Poor hydration adversely affects a child's mental performance and learning ability. Symptoms of mild dehydration may include tiredness, headaches and a feeling not unlike jet lag, as well as reduced alertness and ability to concentrate. Mental performance including memory, attention and concentration can decrease by about 10 per cent, once thirst is felt. Mental performance deteriorates progressively as the degree of dehydration increases.

Thirst is usually felt when dehydration results in 0.8 - 2 per cent loss of body weight lost due to water loss. For a 10-year-old child weighing 30kg this is equivalent to one or two very large glasses of water (300ml each), which is the amount a child could lose during a PE lesson or running around in the playground. Water consumption also has an immediate alerting and revitalizing effect. In schools taking part in the Food in Schools water provision pilot project, the consensus from teachers was that "enhanced provision contributed to a more settled and productive learning environment, as well as helping to instil good habits". The key to boosting the capacity to learn is to keep well hydrated throughout each day (ideally from a personal water bottle within arm's reach).

What are the effects of dehydration on children?

The early effects of even mild dehydration are significant for health, well being, performance and learning - and in the long term carry a higher risk of a number of health problems and disease states. These include constipation, continence problems, kidney and urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and some cancers. In some scientific studies, a decrease in cancer risk was specifically associated with water, as opposed to any other fluids.

Encouraging pupils to drink water during exams, but not during normal lessons the rest of the year?

We have heard many reports of this happening in schools. While we normally welcome initiatives to promote drinking water during the school day, doing so for just one or two weeks seems to imply that the school doesn't have concerns for the health and well being of the pupils in their care during the rest of the long school year, which, we hope, would not be the case in any school. Drinking water regularly throughout the school day makes healthier pupils who in turn make better learners. Exam results are not determined by performance on the day alone.

Children need to be adequately hydrated during all school lessons in order to maximise their learning potential. By the time a child feels thirsty, their mental performance may have deteriorated by 10% - attention, concentration and memory are all adversely affected. Furthermore, it normally takes a few weeks for bladders to adjust to an increased water intake so introducing increased water consumption at the start of exams is not very helpful! There are definite benefits to encouraging pupils to drink water during exams, not only improving performance but also helping to cool them down and reduce stress levels, but pupils should be drinking water regularly during the school day throughout the rest of the year too.

1. Watching the same movie twice

He's seen the movie. Although he wasn't very impressed with it, but because you haven't catch it he suddenly changed his tune and said he really would like to watch it a second time.

And so by the way, if you haven't seen it too, why not let's go catch it together, he asked.

You know his intention is then not on the movie, but the company really.

So girls, do not expose his true intentions. It's enough to know the underlying truth, be appreciative ok?

2. His car is playing songs that just sound too, familiar?

Because those are your favorites! You have merely casually mentioned to him once, and the next time he drives you, you're in for a musical feast.

Is he always so attentive to everyone's needs and preferences? Well, you observe how he interacts with others and you tell me.

3. He asks that question!

Well, he will try to be as casual and nonchalant about it as possible. But no matter how cool he acts, deep down inside he is burning and dying to know the answer to this question:

"So, are you single?"

If your answer is yes, then this will be the next one:

"No way. How can someone like you be single? You mean, you don't have a boyfriend?"

Now watch his body language closely. If you notice he is feeling tensed up by now, and totally relieved when your answer is "No" then you get the message.

4. He asks for a follow-up date even before the date is over

Now if he isn't interested in you, why would a man be so anxious to "book" your time for another date with him even when the date is only half-way through?

Unless you look like Jessica Alba, or you can give him a million-dollar job like Donald Trump. If you aren't either one of the two or belong to either one of the category, then this can be a clue to his heart...

5. Your name is not foreign to his friends

If you do get a chance to meet up with his friends, which you know you can create such opportunities, you'll get some nice juicy bits from them.

But this may not be very fool-proof, neither are all of these signs, but if his friends raise their eyebrows or grin sheepishly when he introduces you to them, then that means word has been around within that gang on someone in particular, which could very well be you.

6. He can't remove his eyes from you

Ok, we know that's not the kind of stare-through-your-clothes type, but rather a slightly more loving kind of gaze that speaks of admiration and liking.

If the eyes could speak, they may just pop this question on behalf of their owner "You are the most beautiful lady I've ever seen. Would you like to be more than friends?"

The best test? When a bombshell or super gorgeous babe sashays past, you need to alert him before he notices her. (Of course, this is really carrying it a little far ha ha.... what does it take to stop a man's roving eyes? I can't find the answer yet)

7. He prompts you

Every now and then, he will find a chance to ask you what type of guy you are attracted to and are looking for in a partner.

Unless he's doing what I'm doing (which puts me in a really privileged position to ask ha ha), what business is it for him to know what kind of man you like if not for the fact that he is secretly plotting his way to become the most suitable candidate?

Don't be surprised if he starts putting himself down or discrediting himself by saying things about him that don't fit into the list you described. He is testing waters to see what your reaction would be, which will give him some clues on how you feel for him.

For example you listed "having a good sense of humor and making you laugh" as one of the traits which you will be attracted to, and he says "Oh, I'm a boring guy actually. I don't know how to crack jokes or make girls laugh. I must be boring you then" be careful of what you reply him.

If you say "Ya, I don't think you are the type of humorous person either" versus "Oh is that so? But I never find you boring at all. In fact, I feel we have lots of things to chat about" he will either be secretly weeping in sorrow or jumping in joy .

By saying things like that, he is kind of "forcing" you to give a respond, and either way you will be giving away clues on how you feel. So girls, if you fancy this guy too, you know what kind of answer you should give, right?

8. He is doing you favors

Yes, he doesn't mind ferrying you around if he has a car. He will also volunteer to accompany you all the way to an out-of-the-way place to satisfy a sudden craving you have for a food delicacy that is sold there.

He wiil help you with your school work, express his interest in lending you a hand for errands you need to run, buy some things for your family etc.

If a man isn't interested in developing something further than friendship with you, unless he is too bored with his life or he's Mr Super Ultra Nice, then I wonder what could it be that prompts him to be everywhere when you need his help.

9. He's very anxious about celebrating special occasions.

Like Valentine's Day (if he asks you out on that day, I would really suspect his intention, wouldn't you?) and your birthday.

He would long to celebrate this special day with you, and preferably alone.

10. He buys you gifts

Sending gifts on no apparent occasion and for no reason is the easiest way for a man to declare his interest in a girl without verbalizing it. By giving you something, he is testing to see how you react. Usually he will do this when he still isn't sure of how you feel towards him, so at least he won't feel rejected if you reject his gift.

At the same time, he is hoping to make you happy with that gift. And if you are happy, he will be too!

Summarizing the above, they may not be 100% fool-proof scientifically proven signs to show he's into you. They came from pure experience and observation. I purposely didn't include things like body language where he will check how he look before meeting you, pointing his leg and facing his body towards you etc because I just want to make this as non-scientific as possible.

So ladies, hope this gives you some clues to how this man who is appearing in front of you pretty often lately feels about you. Does he has only platonic friendship in mind, or something more?

Dating After Divorce - Even Today, Men Still Enjoy the Chase

This article might seem shocking and archaic, but it's all true. The other night I had dinner with my husband and two of his single male friends (Ben and Jack) who launched into a tirade about dating today. These good-looking, 40 something, self-employed bachelors are frustrated with trying to find a decent woman. I couldn't believe it.

The Problem?
Ben and Jack think women today act desperate. Of course I asked for specifics - what does desperate look like? Turns out it boils down to two very basic and rather traditional concepts:

1) Men don't want women to chase them
2) Men don't like when "the chase" is too easy

Dating is an Ancient Mating Ritual
What? How can this be in an age of equality between the sexes? It's really very simple - dating harkens back to ancient mating rituals that have not gone away, nor been modified as much as women would hope.

Dating Guidelines from the "Fellas"

According to Ben, Jack and others, here are some guidelines that women might try following if they want to be perceived as "quality prospects" during your initial encounters with men:

1) With online dating, don't initiate a flood of emails. Some women email multiple times a day which makes them appear demanding, needy, or high maintenance. Frequent contact can cause him to feel crowded. Initially, let men set the pace.

2) Don't Call to Say Hi, Check in, or Discover Why He hasn't Called. This is seen as pushy and desperate. If you don't like the slow pace, perhaps the guy isn't the right one for you. If you feel compelled to call when you haven't heard from him, don't make more than one light-hearted and friendly call. That's it. Either he'll pick up the ball or not, but leave that ball in his court.

3) As horrible as this old saying is, "There's no reason to buy the cow if the milk is free." The double-standard is still alive! While all men don't feel this way, it's pretty hard to know who does and who doesn't before it's too late. The best course of action is to hold off on intimacy to insure you'll get the respect you want and deserve.

The Chase Remains Important and Desirable

Most men still prefer to pursue women during the initial phase of dating. They want to chase and win you over, rather than feel like you're a push over. It's not about playing really hard to get. It is about not being too available or overly enthusiastic. Simple human nature creates the desire to want what isn't readily available and without this tension, there's nothing to "conquer."

If you think about it, women feel the same way. My female clients complain all the time about men who are "too nice," clingy, or come on too strong. Or think about all the women who love "bad boys;" men who are unavailable or unattainable. This is the flip side of the very same coin, so to speak.

My conclusion about Ben and Jack's perspective on dating is this: For better or worse, the Dating Game is still in play. You can deny it or fight against it if you want. But that won't change the cold, hard facts from most men's perspective.

You're Best Bet is to Play the Game

Instead of chasing someone and risking the appearance of desperation, use your feminine charm to draw a man in. Let him know and see why you're a great catch.

Demonstrate your delightful character by being fun to be with and looking your best. Flirt with him, flatter and praise him (but keep it genuine please), and show appreciation by thanking him. And, let him lead the way for at least the first 4-8 dates. It may be "old school" but there's no arguing with what has worked well for eons and still works today. Try following this plan and discover how well it can work for you too. Chances are, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

The projects are easy to do, yet they meet the requirements of most science fairs and most fifth grade teachers. o Does the shape of ice affect melting time? Use the same amount of water, place into different shaped containers and freeze. Then see how much time each piece of ice takes to melt.

o Which toilet tissue is most biodegradable? Take samples of different types of toilet tissue, and soak them until they fall apart. Run the samples through a strainer, and see which sample leaves the most paper undissolved.

o Which citrus fruit has the most Vitamin C? Make an indicator solution with iodine and starch (it's EASY to do!), and test samples of citrus fruit or juice to see which one has the most vitamin C.

o Which brand cereal stays crunchy longest? Weigh different brands of the same cereal, soak in water, and then weigh again to see which one absorbed more water.

These are demonstration science projects - when your teacher wants you to demonstrate a scientific principle to the class.

o Demonstrate that yeast gives of gas. Place a yeast and sugar solution into a bottle, put a balloon on top, and watch the yeast give off gas so that the balloon blows up!

o Demonstrate how static electricity works. Make a ball of aluminum foil dance between your finger and a pie plate. Watch this one on www.youtube.com/watch

o Demonstrate how chemical reactions can be sped up. Put alka seltzer into a cup, and watch it fiz. Then do it again with crushed alka seltzer, another time with warm water, and yet another time with TWO alka seltzers.
