Characteristics of Pre-Teen Aggressive Boys

If we understand the characteristics of preteen aggressive boys, we can find ways to help these youth to be less aggressive. This was the purpose of a recent study. To this end, the characteristics of 231 boys ages 2 to 12 were assessed. The problems, treatment needs and resiliency of this group were evaluated. Youth with assaultive behaviors were compared to youth with no assaultive behaviors. Understanding their characteristics will help inform the direction that treatment needs to take.

[b]Boys[/b]

Of the entire sample, 11% were under the age of 6, 29% were between the ages of 6 and 8, while 60% were ages 9 to 12. Ninety-eight percent of the sample were from rural and suburban areas of the mid- Atlantic region of the US. Eighty-four percent were living at home with their parents and 16% were in the care of an agency. Forty-four percent had a history of assaulting others and 56% did not have such a history. However, 80% had a history of moderate to severe behavior problems and 20% had histories of no or mild behavior problems.

There were similarities among the families of the assaultive boys that were not shared by the families of non-assaultive boys to the same extent. Significantly more (69%) of the families of assaultive boys had histories of family violence, than the families of non-assaultive boys (56%). Similarly, a greater percentage of the families of assaultive boys (65%) had low warmth and high conflict when compared to the families of non-assaultive boys (39%). Additionally, significantly fewer (1/3) of the families of assaultive boys used appropriate disciplinary practices (not too lax or too harsh and consistent), than the families of non-assaultive boys (1/2).

A greater percentage of the group of assaultive pre-adolescent males had skill deficits when compared to non-aggressive same age group of boys. More of the assaultive boys had deficits in problem solving, social, and anger management skills and the ability to have remorse for their misdeeds.

The behaviors of the two groups of boys were compared, as well. There were no differences in the percentage of each group that was known to abuse substances, running away from home, harming animals, or truancy. These behaviors occurred at very low rates in both groups. There were significant differences between groups in the percentage of boys that engaged in fire setting, delinquency, bullying others, and school behavior problems. Significantly more of the assaultive boys engaged in these behaviors than non-assaultive boys. The only behavior engaged in by more than half of the assaultive group was school behavior problems. In terms of resiliency factors, approximately ¼ of the assaultive boys and ½ of the non-assaultive boys were engaged in some type of positive activity. There were no other differences between groups on any resiliency items.

There were no significant differences between groups on the rates of psychiatric or neurological problems or distribution of IQ, However, A greater percentage (61% or 76) of the assaultive group were identified as having attachment problems than the non-assaultive group (31%). The assaultive boys were more than twice as likely to have attachment problems as the non-assaultive boys.

So while we see that there are some differences in the percentage of the 2 groups that have a particular problem, these differences do not totally separate the groups. It was hypothesized that the greater the number of problems and the fewer the resiliency factors, the higher a youth's risk for violent behaviors would be. This appeared to be the case.

Conclusions
The assaultive boys were more than twice as likely to have attachment problems as the non-assaultive boys. having attachment problems meas that it is likely that the assaultive boys were raised in homes where they were abused, neglected, or exposed to domestic violence. Additionally, young assaultive males were twice as likely to lack remorse for their victims. More than half of the violent boys had anger management, problem solving and social skill deficits. Significantly more of the assaultive group of boys engaged in delinquent and bullying behaviors, fire setting and school behavior problems. A greater percentage of assaultive boys came from families with histories of violence, high conflict and low warmth, and inappropriate disciplinary practices.

Studies have indicated that high conflict, low warmth, violence, and inappropriate discipline in the home can lead to attachment problems among children. it has also been reported that attachment problems can be associated with problem solving, anger management and social skill deficits in children. These skill deficits can lead to delinquency and school behavior problems. The more of these problems that a youth and his family have, the more likely a youth will continue to have serious behavior problems, such as violence.

This information supports the research that youth with violent behaviors and their families have multiple problems and need multi-faceted treatment that addresses the needs of the youth and his/her family. It also points out that the domestic violence of parents is significantly related to the violence of the youth in their care. We must advocate for assessment and services for the children who are in households where there is domestic violence. It also points to the needs for families to be included in the interventions for youth who are at risk for violent behaviors.

Oak Ridge Boys "Front Row Seats" Country Music CD Review

The Oak Ridge Boys have of course been around for a good long time now. Having crossed over to Country Music from Gospel roots, in the late 70's.

I have to say that this latest CD of theirs, Front Row Seats, is pretty doggone good. Proving they are still going strong, and do indeed have more to offer country music fans.

The CD is full of the harmony that over the years has become their signature. It's a bit of a return to the great country sound that the Oak Ridge Boys are known for. With each band member getting their chance in the spotlight.

Although every track on Front Row Seats is great, some of the really outstanding tunes include "Dream On Me" with it's great beat, the first radio single off the CD "Hard To Be Cool (In A Minivan)," and "Closer To Home". All great songs with great lyrics. As are all the tracks on the CD.

This CD really could be their best to date, and that's covering a lot of ground.

It seems like The Boys just keep getting better and better. Front Row Seats is a CD that should be in every Oak Ridge Boys or country music fan's collection.

Increase the Attention Span of Boys With These Tips

As a general rule, the attention span of boys tends to be shorter than that of girls. Obviously this varies with each child. There are more boys who suffer from ADHD. And even boys who have wonderful powers of focus still have a tendency to move, bounce, fiddle with objects, look around, and generally want to be on the move.

Fortunately, it is possible to promote a healthy environment for your boys which will be more conducive for their homeschooling. Consider these lifestyle choices to better keep your son's attention:

* Organize your day - A consistent routine is good for all children and especially for boys and/or those who might struggle with ADHD.

* Turn off the TV - Keep TV watching and listening to the radio to a minimum. Children need quiet times without background noise in order to think, listen, and read to their full potential.

* Consistent Bedtimes - Set an early bedtime, one which will allow your child to get plenty of sleep. If your child is getting 8 hours of sleep per night or less, they are NOT getting adequate rest at night. Children need a surprising amount of sleep. At age 5, your child needs 11 hours of sleep. By age 10, they still need 9.75 hours of sleep. At age 18, children still require 8.25 hours of sleep!

* Breakfast - Make sure your child has a hearty breakfast and a multi-vitamin. Having a well-balanced breakfast will help them to think more clearly and not get as tired during their studies.

* Discipline - Provide consistent discipline for your children. Set a few clear rules and stick to them. If your sons are well disciplined during regular life, they will also be much better disciplined during school hours. Your son's attention span should be at least 3-5 minutes long for each year of his age. So the typical kindergartener should be able to stay on task for at least 15 minutes. When we are homeschooling boys, there are several things we can do to help increase the attention span of boys as well as their enjoyment for learning:

* Breaks - Take a break between topics and allow your boys to get up, stretch, run down the hall... even to run a few laps around the house. Including some activities for boys such as these will allow them to release their pent up energy will go a long way towards helping them to stay focused while they study.

* Change it up - Boys get easily bored with the same information or the same methods. If they understand a topic, move on. You can go back and review later to make sure that they fully grasp the information. If you review over and over with boys they will become bored and their minds will disengage. Also, try new techniques with boys. If you usually do math worksheets, try having them answer orally or on the computer. This will help them to remain interested and will certainly increase the attention span of boys.

* Control - Boys love to feel that they have at least some control over their studies. Give your sons several choices that you would be happy with and let them make some of the decisions. Or let them decide which subject they are going to tackle next. When boys are given this kind of freedom, you will find yourself struggling with them less throughout the day.

* Interest Area - The greatest motivator for boys is to teach them something that interests them. Let your boys pick topics they are interested in and then allow them to explore them fully. They can do this in addition to their regular studies or during breaks. Their excitement for all of their studies will increase when they are allowed to pursue things they love as well.

* Manipulatives - Give your boys objects that they can taste, touch, smell and see. Boys learn well with tactile and kinesthetic learning; so, the more of their senses you can incorporate into activities for boys, the more understanding and enjoyment they will have of their lessons.

* Movement - Ensure lots of opportunities for movement. Boys have lots of energy. If you allow them to expend this energy in accepted ways, they will be less likely to act out when it isn't appropriate.

* Spread Out - Rather than keep your boys confined to a desk, let your boys spread out at a table, on the floor, or on the couch. If boys are allowed to move around a bit while doing their book work or papers, you will find that they will get their work done more quickly and with less resistance.

* Silly Stuff - If you're finding it hard to hold the attention of your sons, try speaking in a silly voice or acting goofy as you are presenting the information. Injecting a little bit of unexpected humor into your presentations can really grab and hold the interest of boys.

* Talk Breaks - Provide frequent talk breaks for your boys to minimize disruptions. Boys have lots of questions - make sure you give them opportunities to ask these questions and to probe as deeply into a topic as they would like.

* Visuals - Use lots of visuals to maintain interest. Most boys learn visually, so seeing the information will make it easier for them to learn that just hearing the information.

Nevertheless, some of these most holy 99 names may be used as first names if the prefix "Al" (meaning: the) is dropped. Therefore, names such as: Malik, Ra'ouf, Hakeem and Majid may be used.

It is worth mentioning that other preferred names include names of Prophets, Scholars, Martyrs and great leaders. Thus, one of the most common names in the world, Muhammad, honors the Prophet (Peace be upon him) and is very desirable, despite the fact that it does not come into the category of names denoting servitude to Allah.
